Citadella Budapest

On top of beautiful Gellert Hill in Budapest Hungary sits the stunning Citadella which boasts beautiful stunning views of the entire city including the Danube. The fortress dates back to 1851 when it was built by the Commander of the Habsburg Monarcy, Julius Jacob Von Haynau shortly after the Hungarian Revolution of 1848. It is a U shaped structure occupying most of the 235 metres high plateau. It is 220 meters long, 60 meters wide and the walls are 4 meters tall.

After the Austro Hungarian Compromise of 1867 which lead to the establishment of Austria-Hungary it was decided that the Citadel should be destructed with the garrison troops leaving in 1897. In late 1899 the city took possession of the Citadel and the walls were demolished by early 1900.

Today the Citadella is a popular tourist destination situated in what many believe to be the most beautiful point of Budapest with stunning views of the entire city including views of the parliamentbuilding, the Buda Castle as well the Chain Bridge and a number of other bridges spanning the
Danube. It hides a three-level air raid bunker which now hosts numerous exhibitions and also has an award winning restaurant.

The restaurant offers exquisite hungarian and international cuisine with seating available for up to 500 guests spread out in eight beautifully decorated rooms. The restaurant also offers a daily folklore show and live music making it perfect for many events such as weddings and banquets. They offer daily special menus as well as exotic cocktails, coffee specialties, beers and even a grill offering delicious steaks.

The Monarchy courtyard has been restored and hosts fairs and different programs everyday, giving off a great feel of daily life during the Hungarian-Austrain Monarchy. The Citedalla is a great tourist attraction with something for the entire family whether it be the great history, the great views or the great food.
